On January 21st, Kamala Harris made history as the first female Vice President of the United States, but also of black and Indian descent. Throughout her career, first as a prosecutor rising to California’s Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and now as Vice President, Harris has often discussed how paramount her familial background —and specifically, her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris — has been in shaping her beliefs and ultimately, her achievements. In many public addresses, Harris has credited much of her success to her mother. A Chennai, India native, Gopalan moved to the U.S. at age 19 to pursue a doctoral program at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received her PhD in nutrition and endocrinology and became a successful breast cancer researcher, scholar and teacher.
Vice President Kamala Harris represents the multiculturalism that defines America. She may be the first Vice President whose parents were both immigrants to the U.S. but will not be the last. In fact, in the 116th Congress, 13% of lawmakers are immigrants themselves or the second generation of immigrants. In FY 2019, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) granted lawful permanent residence to nearly 577,000 individuals through family-based, employment-based or other special channels.
One of the most popular employment-based immigration programs is the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program. Administered by USCIS, the EB-5 Program is designed to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors and has been recognized as a way to potentially increase personal and economic freedom.
“The EB-5 Program has been a gateway for high net-worth individuals in pursuit of prosperity, better education and job prospects, and in time, U.S. citizenship for families,” said Rohit Turkhud, Partner at Fakhoury Global Immigration. “Many of our clients favor the EB-5 Program because it allows the investor (and their qualifying family) to migrate to the ‘land of opportunities’: the opportunity and ability to work and live anywhere in the U.S., pursue any legal occupation they may want to – irrespective of their academic achievements – and realize their American dream in so many ways. They can also ‘retain’ their ties to their homeland through the OCI program and continue to flourish in the U.S. and India with few restrictions, if any at all. The EB-5 program is a win-win for India and the US. “
In fact, in FY 2020, India accounted for 17% of the total EB-5 visas issued world-wide, an increase of nine percent from the previous year.
“When I established CanAm in 1987, I was naturally intrigued by the Canadian and U.S. Immigrant Investor Programs, because I myself am an immigrant,” commented Tom Rosenfeld, President and CEO at CanAm Enterprises, a leading EB-5 Regional Center operator. “I was sensitive to the unspoken concerns of my parents who had uprooted themselves to go to a foreign country with the dream of providing a better life for their children. My personal backstory, along with my business background and professional aspirations, fed my passion for this venture,” Rosenfeld added.
America is a diverse country built through many decades of hard work by generations of immigrants who believe in pursuing the American Dream, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement, no matter where they came from. For families that are able to obtain and invest the minimum amount, the potential benefits of the EB-5 Program are substantial.
